The Showcase Regions for Electric Mobility

In 2011 the federal government made a decision to undertake steps to support electric mobility. Therefore, the Federal Government implemented a promotional programme called “Electric Mobility Showcase”. In selected regions the technologies have been integrated into large scale demonstration and pilot plans to give the project visibility. Through close cooperation between industry, science, and central government, innovative elements of electric mobility have been tested. The programme generated public awareness and increased national and international demand.

In 2012 the federal government selected the following showcase projects based on recommendations made by an independent specialist jury:

• Living Lab BWe mobil (Baden-Württemberg)

• International Showcase of Electric Mobility (Berlin-Brandenburg)

• Our Horsepower Turns Electric (Niedersachsen)

• Electromobility Connects (Bavaria-Saxony)

In the 4 showcase regions about 140 projects were supported by the federal and state governments as well as other participants from 2012 to 2015. The showcase programme was managed as an inter-departmental project by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI), the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), including the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUB). These funded the programme to the amount of Euro 180 Mio. The total amount of investment for the Federally supported projects, including project involvement by other partners, amounts to almost Euro 300 Mio.

The Showcase Regions

Living Lab BWe mobil (Baden-Württemberg)

Baden-Württemberg has developed into a pioneering region for sustainable mobility. In addition to the top cluster Electric Mobility South-West, the state also contained the “Living Lab BWe” showcase. The showcase project network with more than 100 participants from business, science, and central government focused on the question of how electric mobility can now be integrated into our traffic systems and everyday lives. The application-orientated mobility solutions and their economic potential have been tested in practice.

Approximately 40 projects focused their activities on the region of Stuttgart and the city of Karlsruhe. Of these 24 were federally promoted, 7 associated and 13 were promoted by the state. By 2015 about 2000 electrical vehicles have been in operation and more than 1000 charging points were installed. The projects dealt with following topics: intermodality, fleets, commercial traffic, energy, infrastructure, ICT, residency and electric mobility, town and traffic planning, vehicle technology, communication and participation, training and qualifications as well as over-lapping research.

The showcase “Living Lab BWe mobile” has been promoted by the federal government to the amount of approx. Euro 45 Mio. In addition, further electric mobility projects have been promoted by the state of Baden-Württemberg and the Stuttgart region. Associated companies provided additional project funds.

ELECTRIC MOBILITY CONNECTS (Bavaria-Saxony)

Bavaria and Saxony already demonstrated the entire value-added chain from development and production of the drive battery to series production of electric vehicles to the inclusion of vehicles in energy and traffic systems. In the “Electric Mobility Connects” showcase, more than 100 project participants from both states cooperated to develop economically feasible business models for electric mobility. The participants involved considered electric mobility to be a comprehensive system consisting of innovative vehicle technologies, sustainable traffic and mobility concepts including sustainable energy systems.

Approximately 40 projects worked around the interfaces of electrical vehicle energy systems and traffic concepts which have been structured into five areas of focus, namely, long-distance, urban, and rural mobility, international connections, and training including further training. Thereby 26 projects and 1 associated project have been promoted by the federal government and a further 10 projects by the states.

The “Electric Mobility Connects” showcase was promoted by the federal government to the sum of about Euro 39 Mio. In addition, other projects involved in electric mobility have been promoted by the states of Bavaria and Saxony to the amount of Euro 15 Mio. each. Furthermore, some involved companies injected project funds.

International Showcase of Electromobility (Berlin-Brandenburg)

Berlin holds a leading position in Germany in the practical applications of electromobility, whereas Brandenburg plays a leading role in sustainable energy production. It is Berlin-Brandenburg’s ambition to become an internationally recognised showcase for the development, testing and application of electromobility.

In more than 20 federally promoted projects, including 2 associated projects and 9 state projects focusing on driving, charging, storing, and networking, electromobility becoame tangible and visible. Networking has been a special point of focus. Traffic offers such as public transport or car sharing were coordinated with each other and connected to an intelligent power grid which was primarily supplied by the Brandenburg wind turbines.

The Berlin-Brandenburg showcase received funding of Euro 37 Mio. from the federal government. In addition, the states of Berlin and Brandenburg funded the showcase projects with Euro 19 Mio., and companies contributed approximately Euro 35 Mio.
